How to Fold the Origami Sonobe Module Unit
Folding This Simple Sonobe Unit
Origami is the art of folding paper. There's something about being able to fold a square piece of paper (or a series of sheets) that makes something that is pretty even if it is not all that functional, that makes you feel rather complete. It makes you feel like you have done something important, something ancient.
This unit is one of those things that looks extremely complicated, but when you figure out how to fold one and are able to assemble and 8 or 20 point star, you will feel accomplished as an origamist.
Find Your Post-It Note
To make the Sonobe Unit, I used a normal sized 3-inch Post-it note. You can find them just about anywhere. I stole some off the desk of my neighboring cubicle (with permission of course) to make my modules.
Step 2
Fold the Post-it note in half. I like to have the sticky side at the top and on the inside of the fold when I fold it. This will allow the sticky side not to get in the way later on when I try to put together multiple units.
Step 3
Open the fold you just made, then fold the right side in to meet the center crease.
Step 4
Do the same to the left side.
Step 5
Open the right side and fold the top, right corner to meet the crease furthest to the right.
Step 6
Rotate the Post-it note and fold the top right corner again, just like you did in the last step.
Step 7
Refold the two sides towards the center crease.
Step 8
Fold the Top left corner so the top edge meets the right edge.
Step 9
Tuck that same corner under the right flap to look like the picture to the right.
Step 10
Rotate the Post-it note and do the same thing to the opposite side.
Step 11
Flip the whole thing over and fold the top corner down so there is a diagonal across the center of the Post-it note. Do the same thing to the bottom corner.
Step 12
Finally fold the diamond along the diagonal made by the two corners. Your Sonobe Unit should look like the image above.
